The University of Cambodia Funding Campaign: 2018-2023

Impacting the Future of Cambodia through Education

Campaigning to Make a Difference in Cambodia
This year marks an important milestone year for UC as it celebrates its 15th Anniversary since its founding in 2003. In our 15 years of development and achievements, we have grown from a small building with a few hundred students to a much larger, more dynamic campus filled with thousands of students who seek out one of the best educational institutions in the Kingdom of Cambodia. We have graduated over 4,000 outstanding students who have gone on to pursue notable careers across multiple sectors, including the government, academia, development, and private sector. While we are proud of the far-reaching impact that we have had on the community, The University of Cambodia is ready to widen its scope and further contribute to the development of the country. Thus, to celebrate our 15th anniversary, we are launching a fundraising campaign to raise $300 million, so that we can provide even more opportunities to young Cambodian scholars and ensure that every young person, despite his or her financial background, has access to quality education and a brighter future.

The University of Cambodia’s Role in Education and Development
In order to further develop the nation, the human resources in Cambodia must be upgraded. Education is the primary mechanism that can address the skills gap in the labor market, increase productivity, spur innovation and technological development, and reduce poverty, which is why Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen has declared that human resource development is the #1 priority in Cambodia. For 15 years, The University of Cambodia has offered challenging curricula degree programs for students with the aim of building an intellectual society and promoting a culture of reading, critical thinking, and analysis.
However, we want to do more. As we look towards the future, we aspire to move beyond Phnom Penh to other regions of the country, and we are expanding our idea of education to include vocational and teacher training. We want to strengthen the quality of our faculty to ensure that our students are receiving the best education possible, and in order to compete in the integrated labor market, we would like to provide more state-of-the-art facilities for our students.
But we need your help.

Moving Forward: 2018-2023
This funding campaign, which will take place from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2023, is designed to support UC’s academic mission, vision and roadmap by emphasizing the following key areas:
(1) Prioritizing students in pursuing their academic and professional goals;
(2) Focusing on research, innovation and creativity;
(3) Raising the standards of teaching and academic quality; and
(4) Building conducive and modern learning and research environments
In particular, The University of Cambodia has identified eleven key areas where funding is most needed in order to ensure that the University continues to deliver quality education and academic excellence for Cambodian youth.
(1) Student scholarships and stipends

  • We want to give a chance for those outstanding students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to excel in higher education, including allowances to cover the cost of books, supplies, and living expenses.

(2) Faculty and academic development/improvement (through endowed chairs and professorships)

  • In order to strengthen academic quality, we need to establish endowed chairs and professor-ships, guaranteeing that students receive the best education from the top-down. We will continue to update curricula and expand program offerings to respond to the market.

 (3) Research

  • As we transition to a research-focused institution, we must focus on contributing to knowledge and capacity building across all sectors and build the skills needed to do so.

(4) Sports complex development

  • We want to offer a wider range of sports options for our students so they can balance their academic work with athletics, thus promoting a culture of teamwork, health, and fun.

(5) Library development (The University of Cambodia Library building)

  • While the University has one of the largest libraries in Cambodia, it still is severely lacking compared to other international institutions in terms of physical and electronic resources. A new building would highlight the importance of reading and research, and it would be open to the public to help promote a reading culture for the society at large.

(6) Student dormitories

  • One major obstacle for students from the province is finding a safe, comfortable place to live, especially for our female students. We want to promote gender equality and provide options for those who want to study but have no accommodation in Phnom Penh.

(7) Science laboratories

  • The Royal Government of Cambodia is emphasizing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), so we need to construct the facilities to meet these needs.

(8) Techo Sen School of Government and International Relations building (TSS);

  • As the first degree-granting public policy institution in Cambodia, TSS deserves its own dedicated building in order to attract the best and brightest students in the region.

(9) Establishment of The University of Cambodia campus in Siem Reap

  • We want to diversify education locations in Cambodia and we plan to offer academic, vocational and technical training/teaching programs for those in the Siem Reap area.

(10) Establishment of The University of Cambodia campus in Kampot

  • We also want to provide the same academic, vocational and technical training/teaching programs for those who live in the southern provinces of Cambodia. This campus would help increase the number of people who can benefit from a high quality education.

(11) Maintenance of our facilities at our Phnom Penh campus

  • We are proud of our eleven-story building, and we want to ensure that it remains as attractive and modern as it grows older.
