Mainstreaming Education on Human Rights and Criminal Justice in to Cambodia Universities

From 1 – 5 February 2016, Mr. Khorn Sokheng, Assistant Dean for the College of Law, and Mr. Prak Sophorn, Assistant to the College of Law, attended a training workshop organized by the WSD Handa Centre for Human Rights and International Justice, based at Stanford University, entitled, “Mainstreaming Educa-tion on Human Rights and Criminal Justice in Cambodian Universities,” which was held in Sihanouk Province. Speakers and presenters hailed from Stanford University, Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, Centre for the Study of Humanitarian Law, and various other international criminal law organizations. Attendees hailed from both public and private higher education institutions, lawyers, judges, and legal experts from international organizations.

The workshop was presided over by Ms. Melanie Jane, Regional Manager of WSD Handa Centre for Human Rights and International Justice, based at Stanford University. In her opening remarks, she expressed her profound thanks and appreciation to the organizers, presenters, moderators, participants, and those involved in making this meaningful event happen. She hoped that all participants would actively participate in the workshop and provide good concepts for implementation.

In her closing remarks, Ms. Melanie Jane appreciated the contributions of the participants, and thanked the presenters and organizers of the workshop. She noted that all attendees actively participated in the five-day training workshop, and the general educational outcome was positive. She hopes that from this training workshop Cambodian universities will integrate the covered material into their higher education curriculum. Moreover, she expressed her desire to have future cooperation among legal experts, universities, and law schools in Cambodia in terms of academic affairs and technical support in the area of international law and curriculum development.
